daniel martin July 2, 2008

@dave - i think i just s**t myself because I was laughing so hard!

chuck July 2, 2008

LOL… and I got this from GOOGLE ALERTS! in the same alert, I was directed to an article from Newsweek. It was TEN YEARS OLD. Here is the link… so lame! Almost as funny as this..

Dial Up A Mortgage
Newsweek - USA
But many traditional mortgage brokers, undoubtedly fearful of being replaced by the new technology, preach caution. What everyone agrees on is that you’ll …

You’re crazy! Countrywide already did this one…

daniel martin July 2, 2008

and Jeff (@titlerep) comes in and takes this to a whole different level!

jbarnes July 4, 2008

NO. No Loan Tool Box. Hate to disappoint you but none of the guys you always see out there have anything to do with the Mortgage Leader Cruise. I did this personally, with the help of a couple friends. Sure some of the well known speakers will be there, but they are speaking about what I wanted to hear, not the stuff you usually hear.

I am a broker in Austin, doing loans everyday just like you, that decided to stop bitching and make a conference worth going to and made one that was not a 3 day infomercial. I dont do conferences for a living. BTW, the website only shows some of the speakers you will hear, not all of them. And no, this has never been done before by anyone.

The training is what your state requires and happens to be free and you dont have to pay for the mini-CMPS classes either, which, btw, are much better than the 1 day CMP designation classes in my personal opinion.

I enjoyed the humor of your post but please don’t imply that my conference is anything like the others you have ever attended. I assure you it’s not…

daniel martin July 5, 2008

@jbarnes - I cannot tell you how much I appreciate your comment for 3 reasons.

#1 - I ABSOLUTELY thought it looked like every other infomercial based conference that the mortgage industry continues to spew out. It has all of the same players and the speakers that just AREN’T relevant to most originators anymore. This industry has changed and most of the “old guard” are unwilling to change with it. If I want to hear Greg Frost, Gibran, or some of the others I’ll buy one of the many DVDs they have available on their site or get it for free when they realize they can’t sell them. RE Blog World, RE BarCamp, Bloodhound Unchained, Inman Connect… these are some cutting edge “must attend” events. They are addressing today’s needs, technological changes, referral partner building strategies that work now being shared by originators working now. The mortgage industry has no need for yesterday’s originators using yesterday’s tactics to speak to a market that is nothing like the market of yesterday. They say it is but stats, technology, and increased consumer awareness make their cheeseball marketing tactics out-dated. The last time most of them originated people were stockpiling bottled water for Y2K!

#2 - My second reason that i am impressed that you spoke up here is that it proves that you are willing to open up dialogue about the industry. I applaud that in a world where sticking you head in the sand is easier than speaking out you chose to place a comment in a public forum.

#3 - you kick ass for doing something about your frustration. I just don’t agree with it; and if we all agreed about everything this world, wouldn’t this world suck!Maybe you should be the featured keynote - I guarantee I’d pay more to hear from the guy who put all of this together than I would for another round of “I Put My Picture On Everything, Even Faxes!” the Greg Frost story.

Final comments: Fire the “big names.” They’re almost done in this business anyway and people are tired of hearing the same old stuff. Hire some real originators like Ricardo Bueno, Dan Green, Brian Kludt, etc; originators shaping the business of tomorrow. They’ll cost you less and the people that attend your cruise will leave feeling like they drank from a fire hose of knowledge.

jbarnes July 5, 2008

Thank YOU! for you comments. I have asked SO many people what they want and so few have ever spoken up. Anyone who reads this please let me know your thoughts too and how to get a hold of the people you want and I will contact them. Also what subjects do you want? Underwiting? More Management? Internet?

We still have time to make some changes and god knows I really don’t want to be just another conference. If you dont know who Rich Schefren is, look him up… He is awesome. I truly believe the saying “if you build it they will come”. You tell me what you want. I already have the ship and we can make this a bad ass time and not just another Vegas conference with rubber chicken… lol

TitleRep July 6, 2008

I think you’re going to need more cutting edge content and some speakers that can talk about how to do business in today’s market.

People are getting tired of these speakers you have lined up. Its the same old same old. Then they’ll probably try to sell you a book or a “system” for the low price of $1500. How long has it been since GF originated a loan? Since Tommy boy sold a home? I could be wrong, but I bet it’s been a while…

jbarnes July 7, 2008

Tom Hopkins is just amazing. If you have not seen him in person or had a chance to talk with him you really can’t appreciate how good he really is in sales techniques.

I agree, some of the speakers are becoming a bit redundant but others like Larry Baer of Market Alert, Rich Schefren of Strategic Profits, Alan Rosenthal of Financial Solutions, Bliss Sawyer, Angie Birdwell of Wells Fargo Commercial, Rick Rogue of Calyx Marketing and others very few people have heard before and are top notch. I need to update the site to show all the speakers. We are also working on a couple other big names that are not mortgage specific.

Title Rep, do you have any suggestions for speakers or training that is needed but currently being offered?

TitleRep July 7, 2008

Daniel pretty much summed it up with his comment above. Get some of the speakers from these events:

“RE Blog World, RE BarCamp, Bloodhound Unchained, Inman Connect… these are some cutting edge “must attend” events. They are addressing today’s needs, technological changes, referral partner building strategies that work now being shared by originators working now.”

These are the people that are performing/producing in todays marketplace. Tom Hopkins(and the others) are great speakers. Being in the industry for almost 8 years now, I’ve been to a lot of their seminars, but some of their strategies just won’t cut it in todays market.

You’ve got an awesome idea, and I wish you luck with it!

-Jeff

jbarnes July 8, 2008

I will look and see what your referring to but I need specifics. What is cutting edge mean to you? Rich Schefren is the best internet guy on the planet. Would you want to see Dan Kennedy or Les Brown? Please realize that besides hearing these guys talk there will be sessions during and after to discuss between yourselves what is working in your market and you can corner the speakers during the 7 days your on board. Also, you will be paying about the same amount to go to these 2-3 day conference as our 7 day cruise….

daniel martin July 8, 2008

While Rich Schefren may be good at what he does, one visit to his site gave me the impression that he’s just out to sell me his next “report.” After that, I’ll probably need to buy another “report,” then another then another…

Those types of guys will still make lots of money and even have some great success. History tells us though, that he will not be around forever. You cannot point to a “buy my report” guy from 10 years ago that is still around today and contributing to the conversation. He is everything that Web2.0 is leaving behind.

What Rich is missing in a BIG way is: it isn’t about him. I don’t care about the Rich “system.” Anyone in this for the long haul knows that “systems” will come and go but our integrity and our voice in the conversation will last for a loooooonnnnggg time.

TitleRep July 8, 2008

Ditto.

Karen Deis July 8, 2008

James and all - I agree with Daniel and was disappointed that you have no women speakers on the cruise seminar.

jbarnes July 10, 2008

Hi Karen! I had asked Debra Jones to come but February is really busy for her in her Mortgages in Mexico business. We do have Bliss Sawyer coming and Angie Birdwell of Wells Fargo, Karol Piere and Debbie McCall of Calyx, so far. I thought I sent you an invite too?

Thanks for the imput. I will do some more research on your suggestions and see what I can do. It is a catch 22 though in many ways. You need the big names to get the attention but at the same time you want people outside the box too to offer different ideas than what your seeing now. To many big speakers saying the same old things keeps people away. Having unknown speakers keeps people from coming too. The challenge is finding that balance and not having to many speakers at one conference. I appreciate you all very much helping me figure that out!

jbarnes July 12, 2008

You guys should look at Stompernet. Talk about cutting edge.

Tony Sena July 14, 2008

Daniel:

Thats a pretty good list you created but someone from Inman.com? What about one of the guys from Active Rain, Jim Cronin or Jay Thompson?

jbarnes July 15, 2008

You guys might want to also attend the free Mortgage Leader Cruise webinars in July and August. There will be some great info given that may help you out. Here is the link.
